When I was a kid I was a huge fan of Mario Bros. My sister, my cousin and I used to spent the whole summer trying to rescue the princess with the pink dress and eating M&M candies as vitamins! But then, we grew up. I never upgraded my Nintendo and I forgot about video games. Because I used to be part of an improv troupe called Ape Rally where I was the only girl and my team mates love video games, I started paying attention to this wonderful world!

During the Dallas Film festival I had the opportunity to talk to April Bennett and Chris Moujaes, the producers in charge of creating a movie based on the video game franchise produced by EA Games and BioWare: Dragon Age! We also talked about the wonderful Cassandra, the female lead character! Check it out, I learned a lot about this new video games:

I said another documentary because these pretty and smart girls were the recipients of the duPont-Columbia University Award for excellence in broadcast journalism for their first film, The Kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt.

I met Charles Baker thanks to my friend Jodie Moore. I was looking for a SAG actor for my short film “Conversation with La Catrina” and Charles was so kind to accept the role of Alfred. I said so kind because now that I am going to a screenwriting class I realized I how bad I am (No worries, I’ll get better).
I was super excited of working with Charles Baker, but at the same time I was terrified. Charles has a recurring role in the TV series Breaking Bad. The location was my apartment, I was sure it was going to be a big difference between my set and the set of Breaking Bad! I have to say this: EVERYONE on the set loved Charles, he was so nice, professional, smart. I remember I was freezing and I had to shot under the rain. Every time the director said cut, Charles put a coat on me so I could stay warm! One of his scenes was on the floor, under the rain, and he did it, without any complain. We shot on a Sunday when it was supposed to be quiet. It was not, it was crazy! Drivers were upset, honking at each other, lots of ambulances, the DART, the wind, the rain. And Charles never complained. He was an inspiration for all of us. I had no words to express how grateful I am for meeting you Charlie!

FAITH, LOVE & WHISKEY receives the $10,000 Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Feature

When Kristina Nikolova received the Grand Jury Prize award at the Dallas International Film Festival for her first feature film “Faith, Love and Whiskey” it was very emotional moment. She said with her super cute Bulgarian accent she was not going to cry and she did cry!
Faith, Love and Whiskey was her first feature film, but she has a huge resume. On IMDb she has eighteen titles as cinematographer, five as a director, four as a writer and more!
You definitely need to keep an eye on her.

Joey Greco was caught on camera by the Pink Iphone!

I met Joey Greco two years ago. He is the only person I have interviewed three times. The First time was outside the Dallas Comedy House (where he was a guest on an Improv show) but the light was not good. The next time was last year when he walked the Red Carpet of DIFF 2011 promoting Ghostbreakers, I was using a new microphone on the iphone, it was too windy, it was a disaster. And finally, I interviewed him this year on the Red Carpet of the Dallas Film Festival 2012!
I knew I will have him on camera one day!

Joey Greco is the host of the TV show called Cheaters! My boss’s daughter was in love with him. One day, Joey saw me performing with my troupe Ape Rally at the Dallas Comedy House. After the show I asked him if he could say hi on the phone to one of his fans. He said yes. I called my boss and she put her daughter on the phone. She couldn’t believe it. Joey was adorable and he made her day. He made my day too!

Joey has a Bachelors in Psychology and a Master’s degree in counseling! And he was also a fitness trainer (check out that body!).

Thanks Joey! It’s always a pleasure to see you!

WOLF receives the $30,000 camera rental Grand Jury Prize for the Panavision Texas Competition

Ya’Ke Smith and Ralph Lopez walked a second Red Carpet at the DIFF Honors, why? Because WOLF won the Grand Jury Prize at the Dallas International Film Festival!

M. Legend Brown walked the Red Carpet of the Dallas International Film Festival with the cast of the short film Kissed by the Devil that he directed and produced. Dallas was very proud of his work.
Kissed by the Devil is an emotional and riveting drama that tears at your heart-strings. Although Oakland Hill is a well-known, late night radio personality, her life is far from storybook. She spends most of her time caring for her mentally ill brother Michael, who witnessed their father commit an unimaginable act. Oakland searches for answers to what really happened. She turns to her brother, who dismisses her in fear of the truth. Unable to find the understanding she’s looking for, Oakland decides to take matters in her own hands. She visits her father days before he is to be executed and what she learns will change her life forever.

This film means a lot to me because it was the first movie I was part of! They needed a maid and I still don’t understand why they asked me to play the part. Are you ready for my very first line on the big screen?

Gayby: from short film to feature film!

Gayby, written and directed by Jonathan Lisecki, is a feature film based on the award winning short film that has screened at over 100 film festivals. The feature film is now taking over festivals too! Gayby has been screened at SXSW, Dallas International Film Festival, Boston, and soon Maryland’s, Seattle and Los Angeles Film Fest.

Somebody Up There Likes Me: A new film by Bob Byington

I was looking at “Somebody Up There Likes Me” official website when I found this production note and I thought about sharing it with you because it is beautiful:
Writer/Director Bob Byington writes:
SOMEBODY is a comedy about a man watching his life fly by.
The screenplay was really a letter to the two leads, Keith Poulson and Nick Offerman, both of whom I’ve worked with now for a few years. Keith has stayed pretty resolutely a non-actor, while Nick has become a very successful television actor, playing cult sensation Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation. I very much liked the idea of pairing them, and would not have made the movie without them.

Dennis O’Neil and Vanessa Leinani promoting Bail Out at DIFF 2012

The first time I met Dennis O’Neil was during a TV commercial shooting where there was more than 60 actors. I love to meet new people so I went and sit down on his table not knowing I was sitting with one of the big names of Dallas. He was fun and smart!
He told me about his project Bail Out, I watched the trailer and I realized how serious and successful this man was. The Pink iPhone tried to get him on camera a couple times but he is a busy man. He couldn’t stayed away this time when he and his co-star from Bail Out, Vanessa Leinani walked the Red Carpet at the Dallas Film Festival.

America’s Parking Lot brought the Cowboys fans to the Red Carpet

I am in love with Jonny Mars, he is super crazy, talented and a great director. I will say he is perfect but he can’t do a Mexican accent at all! Jonny was in Dallas promoting this documentary America’s Parking Lot, a must see for any Cowboy fan! This documentary follows two die-hard fans of America’s Team, Cy and Tiger as they scramble to preserve their place in America’s Parking Lot.
When the Dallas Cowboys move to the first stadium built for a billion dollars, the shifting politics and economics of major league sports threaten to dissolve friendships and traditions, and force Tiger and Cy to make a costly choice to follow their beloved team.

Right? A must see Cowboys fans, Texas natives, football fans, Jerry Jones’ haters, Jonny Mars fans… You know, you should see it, after all who doesn’t know who are the Dallas Cowboys, even this Mexican likes Los Vaqueros de Dallas!

Texas Talent: Larry Jack Dotson

I love our Texas talented actors, one example: Larry Jack Dotson who finally I met in person during the Dallas International Film Festival.
Larry was part of two projects that were shown at DIFF. The short film Kissed by the Devil, directed by M. Legend Brown and Bernie, yes!!! Richard Linklater’s movie starring Jack Black, Shirley McLaine and Matthew McConaughey, how cool is that?

BERNIE opens this weekend in only 2 theaters: The Landmark in Los Angeles and the Violet Crown in Austin. With your support the film will get wider distribution! Satellite of Love, best work out motivator!

This is the first time that I watched a movie and I realized one of the actors had an accent, most of the time it is just English for me. Nathan Phillips who plays the role of Samuel, is an Australian actor who has this cute accent and great abs! I have to say that after watching Satellite of Love I went to the gym. The whole cast has an amazing body and there are several “love” scenes where you get motivated to keep working out!

Director Nicholas McCarthy brought THE PACT and nightmares to my life!

I had the great idea of watching THE PACT at midnight and alone. The screener of THE PACT arrived with a bag of popcorn so I decided to make it special (I love Allied Integrated Marketing, they are very thoughtful). Of course, I jumped several times during the movie and I wondered if my apartment was haunted. That eyes really freak me out. I still see them on my dreams thanks to director Nicholas McCarthy who returned to Dallas with his feature film THE PACT, based on the short film of the same name.

THE PACT begins when Annie begrudgingly returns home to attend the funeral of her mother. As she sorts through her mother’s estate, she feels something unfamiliar and unsettling in the home. Annie seeks help, both professional and supernatural, and starts finding clues to a past she never knew existed. The deeper she seeks the truth, the more her world becomes a nightmare.

Modern Family in Dallas!

The ATT&T performance art center, sponsored by the Museum tower, brought Modern Family to the Winspear Opera House. Of course I was there, I am a huge fan of Modern Family. Why? Because I am a Latina and I totally relate with Gloria’s character, played by Sofia Vergara. The Panel was amazing. We had the opportunity to hear amazing stories from the cast : Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitch), Eric Stonestreet (Cameron), Ty Burrell (Phil) and from the creator of this amazing show Steven Levitan! I Luckily for me, my friend Chad Haught knew Eric Stonestreet. They used to Comedy Improv together in Chicago. So, I asked him to share his experience of being backstage with us:

After the Modern Family Panel was complete I suddenly got really excited. I touched my back pocket to verify the backstage passes that had burning a hole in the for the past two hours and made my way to the super important doorway with people holding clipboards and walkie talkies. After showing my pass given to me by Eric Stonestreet (Cam from Modern Family) I quickly realized that it was special. The woman was taken back and said, “Oh, you get to meet the talent before everyone else. Wait here and I’ll escort you back in a moment.” I stood off to the side and took in the large room that about a hundred people were pouring into. Soft lighting, tall tables for conversation areas, an open bar where you had your choice of champagne, red or white wine and waiters in tuxedos walking around bite sized desserts on silver trays.

The woman with the headset from before finally escorted 12 of us past the 100 people in the large room to the back and through a door that led to the green rooms where we got to talk to Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and show producer Steven Levitan. We met everyone, spoke briefly then they told us to follow them back into the large room with the rest of backstage pass holders. As the swung the doors open we could tell everyone in the room was waiting for that moment to happen. They gasp then were quickly disappointed when they realized it was just friends of the talent but then the flash bulbs started going off when the cast filed in behind us.

After that the cast walked over to the corner where people had lined up behind the velvet rope to take pictures with them. For an hour they shook hands, smiled and repeated the process. Meanwhile we enjoyed some champagne and these delicious cheesecake bites and chatted with the people around us about our favorite Modern Family episode or moment. How Ty’s character was a hero to all of us fathers, the transformation that Eric makes from Kansas farm boy to the fantastically flamboyant character Cam or our other favorite Levitan comedies.

After all the pictures were taken we got to take our own pictures with them and then they filed everyone out of the room so we could figure out a place to meet up for drinks with the cast.

The Other Dream Team

I love to be at the end of the red carpet because like one of the filmmakers told me, I am the exclamation point at the end! I enjoy making people laugh, the bad thing is that sometimes because of time constraint they skip me. When producer Jon Weinbach, director Marius A. Markevicius, assistant coach for the Lithuania national basketball team in 1992 Donnie Nelson (Now General Manager and president of basketball operations for the NBA team the Dallas Mavericks) and Don Nelson (former NBA player/ coach of the Dallas Mavericks) walked the red carpet, they were out of time so I was taping my neighbor interview, but of course I made them talked in Spanish!!!

The Other Dream Team was the last movie I watched during the DIFF 2012. I was so excited to be part of the audience because I couldn’t make it after the Red Carpet.
The Other Dream Team narrates the incredible story of the 1992 Lithuanian basketball team, whose athletes struggled under Soviet rule, became symbols of Lithuania’s independence movement, and – with help from the Grateful Dead – triumphed at the Barcelona Olympics! It was a very emotional documentary! The ratings on IMDb is 9.6 out of 10!

Compliance… a prank caller who got slapped by the Pink iPhone!

After having a glass of wine we decided to enter to see Compliance at the Magnolia theater. I mentioned the wine because red wine relaxes me, and I need it to be relax and watch the movie after hearing the rumor that half of the audience left the theater when it was screened at Sundance. What? At that point my friend went to get me another glass of wine, you know, just in case. The beautiful Farah White introduced the movie and she asked us to stay until the end and discuss it at the Q&A with actor Pat Healy who was in attendance. The movie is based on a real story about a prank caller who convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee.
The movie started, and after 15 minutes I was already getting upset, the anger build in and builds in and God, I was so upset by the end! I made it and I was glad I did. First, I was mad at the filmmakers but then I realized I was mad at society. The filmmakers showed reality.
Next day actor Pat Healy (who plays officer Daniels, the prank caller) walked the red carpet and I had the opportunity to slapped him on camera!

TCHOUPITOULAS receives the $10,000 Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Feature

The amazing brothers Bill and Turner Ross won the Grand Jury Price for their documentary Tchoupitoulas, named after one of the famous streets in New Orleans that the boys wandered on, TCHOUPITOULAS (pronounced “chop-ah-too-less” but his Mexican can’t pronounce).

Sarah Harris described this documentary like this:

The Ross brothers, Bill and Turner, capture the essence of the historic Crescent City with beautiful imagery, presented through the eyes of three brothers who take a ferry across the Mississippi to the French Quarter one night to wander the streets. Experimental in its storytelling style, we walk with the trio, catching only phrases of the boys’ conversation as we drift into restaurants, bars, parades and street corners, all filled with music and intriguing sounds. These vignettes, separated by the youngest boy’s voice serving as a sort of chapter break, combine to equal a kaleidoscope of New Orleans’ rich culture and fascinating people.
